Accelerated Reader
What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer software program that helps teachers manage and monitor students' reading. A student simply picks a book at his or her level and reads it at his or her own pace. When finished, the student takes a short quiz on the computer. Accelerated Reader gives both students and teachers feedback based on the quiz results that the teacher then uses to direct ongoing reading practice.
Students using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience.
Each student is initially given a computer generated test/screening, called the STAR Test, to determine his/her AR reading level. Classroom teachers then inform students individually of the reading level he/she should be looking for in the Oakridge Elementary School Media Center. Students learn how to find these books by using the AR label on the spine of the books in the Media Center. Total points earned per book is determined by their score on the test.
AR Book Find
Accelerated Reader offers the AR Bookfinder for parents and students to search for books that have AR quizzes available for the students. It also provides quiz level, quiz number, and points possible on each selection. Click on the link below to begin your AR search. You can use the AR Book Find for books that may not be from the school library.
AR Home Connect
You can check your child's AR progress from home. You can also see a list of all the books he/she has read and quizzed on. You can even set up e-mail notification for when they take a test. You must have the user name and password the school has provided for you in your Home Connect Letter.
Please contact either Mrs. Moore in the Oakridge library or your child's classroom teacher if you need the log-in information again.
