Leader in Me and Project Lead the Way Executives Visit MPS

Just before winter break, Moore Public Schools administrators had the distinct opportunity to showcase two notable programs to executives from the Leader in Me institute and Project Lead the Way (PLTW). 
 
Franklin Covey Leader in Me President Sean Covey, VP Christine Eisenhauer and Coach and Consultant Michelle Molargik experienced their organization's Leader in Me curriculum at work as students led them through examples of lessons at both the elementary and secondary levels and spoke to principals and teachers about the results they see happening.
 
Southridge student Lighthouse Team members and Principal Laura Rousseau welcomed the guests with a presentation, followed by tours of their site. They explained how the student body worked together to outfit their halls and classrooms with reminders from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. At various stops, students explained how they use the 7 Habits to boost their engagement at school, support and encourage their classmates, set attainable goals and how the habits keep them focused on academic success.
 
MPS earned a $1.2 million grant through Franklin Covey to implement the LIM curriculum, which is based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This school year is the second of a three-year implementation plan. Last school year, all MPS administrators, teachers and support staff were trained. Next year, the concepts will be introduced to families and community partners. Asst. Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Shannon Woodson secured the grant and is guiding the district implementation. 
 
PLTW President and CEO David Dimmet, PLTW Chief Impact Officer Katie Minihan and PLTW Senior VP of Instructional Development Jason Rausch experienced a bit of what MPS students are learning in their PLTW curriculum at Southridge Junior High and Southmoore High School.
 
While at Southridge, the group observed the equipment and spaces available to the Southridge robotics students, which often keep them interested in the engineering pathway as they move into high school.
 
Afterward, they visited Fisher Elementary Principal Tammy Robinson and the student Lighthouse Team. Students in multiple grades sang songs and discussed their 7 Habits lessons and how they benefit from the program. 
 
While visiting Southmoore High School, the team met Head Principal Chealsi Conley and the SHS student Lighthouse Team. Before the tour, visitors had refreshments prepared and served by special needs students who work the school's coffee bar.
 
The team was then given a brief user lesson by the Aviation students and had the opportunity to try the flight simulators in the Aviation Lab. Dimmet, Minihsn and Rausch asked students questions about their time in the class and listened intently to what they said they enjoyed about the lessons they were learning.
